Both sit at the top of a resume, in two or three lines. They do different jobs.

Objective

This page

Says the job you want and one reason you fit it. Use one when your work history doesn’t say it for you:

  • You’re a student or applying for an internship
  • It’s your first job, or close to it
  • You’re changing careers
  • You’re returning after a break

Second-year business student applying for a marketing internship. Grew the drama society’s Instagram from 300 to 1,900 followers in one term.

Summary

Leads with your job title, years and best results. Use one once you’ve done the same kind of job for a year or two, because your experience already says what you’re after.

Accountant with five years in month-end close for manufacturers. Cut the close from eight working days to five.

Write a summary from your results

How to write a resume objective in four parts.

Three parts carry it. The fourth is there if you have room. The generator above writes it this way.

  1. Who you are now

Your year and subject, your qualification, or the job you're leaving.

    Final-year accounting student

  2. The exact role

The job title as the advert words it, so a recruiter's search finds it.

    applying for an audit internship.

  3. One strength, with proof

Something you did that shows the strength, with a number if you have one.

Reconciled every transaction on a budget of 4,000 a year as club treasurer.

  4. What you'll do for them

Optional. One short line about the work, never about what you want from it.

Comfortable with Excel pivot tables and lookups.

Questions about resume objectives

Resume summary generator, with examplesExample resumes for 60 rolesCheck the bullet points under itPractise the interview with Pip

What is a resume objective?

Two or three lines at the top of a resume that name the job you're applying for and what you bring to it. It's for people whose work history doesn't tell the story yet: students, first jobs, career changers and people going back to work after a break.

Should I put an objective on my resume?

Only when your experience doesn't speak for itself. If you've already done the job you're applying for, write a summary instead, because it leads with results. If you're a student, changing fields or returning after a gap, an objective tells the reader why you're applying and what carries over. A vague one, like “seeking a challenging role where I can grow”, is worse than none.

How long should a resume objective be?

One to three sentences, about 20 to 40 words. The generator keeps its drafts within 50 words and the checker flags anything under 12 or over 50: past that it reads as a paragraph, and the reader skips to your first job.

What's the difference between a resume objective and a summary?

An objective names the job you want and the proof you have so far. A summary sums up what you've already done in that line of work. Use an objective when you're new to the field, and a summary once you have a couple of years of results in it.

How do I write an objective with no experience?

Use what you have: a course, a project, a club, a part-time job. Name the role, then one thing you did with a number in it, then what you can do from day one. For example: “Third-year computer science student applying for a software engineering internship. Built a room-booking app in React and Node.js that 300 students used last term. Ready to write tests and ship small fixes from the first week.”

How do I write an objective for a career change?

Say what you did before, name the new role, then show one skill from the old job that the new one needs, in the new field's words. For example: “Secondary teacher moving into UX design after six years in the classroom. Finished a 12-week UX course and redesigned the school's parent sign-up form; in testing, drop-offs fell from 9 of 20 parents to 2. Applying for junior UX designer roles.”

Should a resume objective use “I”?

No. Leave out “I”, “me” and “my” and start with who you are now: “Final-year nursing student applying for…”, not “I am a nursing student who is looking for…”. It reads faster and leaves room for the proof.

Is it free? Does it use AI?

Free, with no sign-up. There's no AI: the drafts come from fixed patterns around the words you type, so they never claim anything you didn't say. It runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
