Questions about resignation letters

Cover letter builderJob trackerATS resume templates

How much notice should I give?

Whatever your contract or offer letter says. In the US two weeks is the usual courtesy when nothing is written down; in the UK and much of Europe it's often a month or more, and it can grow with seniority. Pick your notice and the date you hand the letter in, and the builder works out your last working day. Tick “Count working days only” if your contract counts Monday to Friday.

Do I have to give a reason?

No. A resignation letter only has to say that you're leaving and when. A short, true reason like a new job, a move or going back to study is fine to include; complaints are not, because the letter stays in your file and can come up in a reference check. Leave the reason on “Prefer not to say” and the letter simply doesn't mention one.

Should I send it by email or as a printed letter?

Tell your manager in person or on a call first, then send the letter the same day so there's a written record with the date on it. Email is fine for most jobs: paste the text into the body, or attach the Word file. Some contracts ask for written notice on paper or a signature; print the Word file if yours does.

Is what I type uploaded or saved?

No. The builder runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent to ATSPrep or anyone else. Your answers are kept in this tab so a reload doesn't lose them, and they're gone when you close it. If you've built a resume in the Studio on this device, the builder reads your name and current job from it to save you typing.

Can I take back a resignation?

Only if your employer agrees. Once notice is given, they can accept it and hold you to the date. Make sure your next step is settled, with a signed offer if you're moving jobs, before you hand the letter in.
