Software Engineer Resume Template

Most software engineer templates are a layout. This one is a scored document. The resume below was run through the same proof engine the ATSPrep studio uses — the numbers on this page are its actual output, not a claim. Copy it, or open it in the studio and watch the score move as you swap in your own work.

What recruiters screen for

Why most software engineers don't get the call

Scope before stack

A hiring manager already assumes you can write code. What they cannot assume is the size of the system you wrote it for. "Built a payments service" and "Built a payments service settling $1.3B a year" describe the same work at two completely different levels. The second one gets the call.

Latency, throughput, availability

These three numbers do more for an engineering resume than any adjective. p99 latency, requests per second, and uptime are the vocabulary of the people reviewing you. If you have them, put them in a bullet. If you do not have them, name the next best scope: users, records, services, dollars.

The keyword filter reads your skills section first

Applicant tracking systems match on literal strings. "K8s" does not match a search for "Kubernetes", and "JS" does not match "JavaScript". Spell the technology out the way the job posting spells it, and keep it grouped so a human can still skim it in two seconds.

One page, until it genuinely cannot be

Under roughly ten years of experience, a second page is almost always the first page written twice. The template below is 352 words. That is deliberate — it leaves room for you to add your own detail without blowing the one-page budget.

Notes on the template

Why each choice was made

Why the current role is in the present tense

Tense is one of the few things a recruiter notices unconsciously. A current role written in the past tense reads like you already left. Every bullet in the first job below opens in the present — Design, Lead, Migrate — and every bullet in the older jobs opens in the past.

Why every bullet carries a number

A claim with no number attached cannot be checked, so a reader discounts it. That is not a style preference — it is why this template's evidence density is what it is. The engine counts the proportion of bullets carrying a metric, a scope or a named outcome, and reports it above.

Why there is no Projects section

With five or more years of paid experience, side projects compete with your actual job for the same page. Add a Projects section only if it shows scale or novelty your employment does not — and cap it at two bullets.
