Questions about cover letters

Keyword scannerBullet checkerATS resume templates

How long should a cover letter be?

Usually 250 to 400 words: three or four short paragraphs that fit on one page with room to spare. The Direct template is shorter on purpose, for jobs where the posting asks for a brief note. The word count under the letter tells you where yours is.

Who should I address it to?

The hiring manager by name if the posting or the company's site gives one. If not, “Dear [company] hiring team” is fine and better than “To whom it may concern”. Leave the hiring manager box empty and the builder writes that for you.

Do I need a cover letter at all?

Not always. Many applications make it optional, and a recruiter may skip it. But when a posting asks for one, when you're changing careers, or when your resume needs a sentence of context, a short letter with one or two real results helps more than it costs.

Is what I type uploaded or saved?

No. The builder runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent to ATSPrep or anyone else. Your answers are kept in this tab so a reload doesn't lose them, and they're gone when you close it. If you've built a resume in the Studio on this device, the builder reads your name, contact details and two results from it to save you typing.

Is this an AI cover letter generator?

No. It fills a proven letter structure with your facts; it doesn't invent anything. Every sentence is a fixed frame around what you typed, so a number appears only if you wrote it. Anything you haven't filled in yet stays a highlighted gap on the page until you do.
