How JazzHR reads your resume
JazzHR publishes its resume rules in one short support article, and the most useful line in it is about scans. A resume that was printed and scanned back in is stored, but the parser treats it as a picture, so the record it produces has no name, no email and no searchable text. Everything else on this page follows from reading that article closely.

What JazzHR pulls out, and what gets lost.
Your file goes in, JazzHR fills the fields it recognises, and the line underneath types what its own documentation says goes missing on the way.

What ATSPrep exports, and whether JazzHR takes it
This is computed at build time by comparing our export formats to JazzHR's published list. It is not written by hand, so it cannot drift out of date.

What trips people up on JazzHR
A scanned PDF is stored but never read
JazzHR says scanned copies of paper resumes are treated as “image” files by the resume parser. The parser then cannot identify any field values, such as first name, last name or email, and the resume content will not be searchable. The file is on the profile; the candidate record built from it is empty.

The support article puts it in one sentence: only files that are Saved As PDF on a computer will be parseable. That rules out phone scans and photographed pages. It is the text-layer rule, stated by the vendor in plain words.
Source: JazzHR Support, file upload troubleshootingResumes get a tighter limit than other files
The supported resume size is 5 MB. Every other document a candidate or recruiter attaches gets 8.5 MB. A portfolio-heavy PDF that would pass as a work sample can still be too large to go in as a resume.

PDF, DOC, DOCX, RTF, ODT and TXT are all listed for resumes. That is a wider list than most systems here, so a LibreOffice export or a plain-text fallback is a real option when a designed file will not go through.
Source: JazzHR Support, file upload troubleshootingThe apply link gives it away
JazzHR's hosted career pages live on a subdomain of applytojob.com, in the form company.applytojob.com. If the application form you are on sits at that address, the employer uses JazzHR.

Go through your file before you apply and tick each one off. Your ticks stay in this browser, so the list is still here for the next JazzHR job.
That is the resume limit, not the 8.5 MB allowed for other files. A text-based export sits far below it; a file near the limit usually means embedded images.
Save the PDF straight from your editor. If you can't select the text in it, JazzHR can't either, and the record will have no name or email on it.
Open the PDF, select all and paste into a plain text note. What lands there is roughly what the parser has to work with.
DOCX, RTF, ODT and TXT are all on the accepted list. If a designed PDF is refused, a plain DOCX of the same content is a legitimate second try.
All four checked. Good luck with this one.
Once it's sent, add the job to your tracker. You'll know which version went where, and when a follow-up is fair.
Read your resume back before JazzHR does.
Guidance is worth less than evidence. Export a PDF from the Studio and the X-Ray re-opens that exact file and shows you the text a parser recovers from it, in reading order, with anything it dropped marked.

JazzHR and your resume
- What is JazzHR?
- JazzHR is an applicant tracking system that employers use to post jobs and collect applications. If the application page sits on a company.applytojob.com address, the employer uses JazzHR and your resume goes through the parsing described on this page.
- Does JazzHR read PDF resumes?
- Yes, if the PDF was saved from a computer. JazzHR says only files saved as PDF on a computer are parseable. A scanned PDF is treated as an image, so no fields are filled and the content is not searchable.
- What file types does JazzHR accept for a resume?
- PDF, DOC, DOCX, RTF, ODT and TXT. JazzHR lists these as the supported resume formats in its support documentation.
- What is the JazzHR resume size limit?
- 5 MB. JazzHR lists a supported resume size of 5 MB. Other attachments, such as work samples, can go up to 8.5 MB per file, but that larger number does not apply to the resume.
- Why did my resume fail to parse in JazzHR?
- The cause JazzHR documents is a scanned resume. A scan is treated as an image, so the parser cannot find your first name, last name, email or any other field, and the text is not searchable. Re-export the resume as a PDF from your editor, or upload a DOCX.
- Does a failed parse mean JazzHR rejected my application?
- Not by itself. JazzHR still stores a scanned resume on the candidate profile. But the record has no extracted fields and your content cannot be found by search, which makes you much harder to find in a recruiter's pipeline.
- How can I tell if an employer uses JazzHR?
- Look at the application URL. JazzHR hosted career pages use a subdomain of applytojob.com, such as company.applytojob.com.
