Backend engineer with seven years building distributed payment and identity systems in Go and TypeScript. Scaled services from 200K to 40M daily requests, cut p99 latency 61%, and led a four-person platform team.
- Design and operate the payments ledger that settles $1.3B annually across 14 currencies, holding 99.98% availability through two regional failovers.
- Lead a four-engineer platform team end-to-end, mentoring two engineers to senior and cutting onboarding time from 6 weeks to 9 days.
- Migrate 38 microservices off a shared Postgres instance to sharded clusters, reducing p99 read latency from 410ms to 160ms.
- Built an event-driven inventory service on Kafka handling 12K events per second, replacing a nightly batch job that ran 4 hours.
- Reduced AWS spend $410K per year by right-sizing 60 EC2 fleets and moving cold storage to S3 Glacier.
- Developed REST APIs in Python serving 1.2M requests per day for a dashboard used by 400 warehouse staff.
- Diagnosed and resolved a memory leak behind 14 production outages, restoring uptime to 99.95%.

Most software engineer templates are a layout. This one is a scored document. The resume above was run through the same Review the ATSPrep Studio uses — the numbers on this page are its actual output, not a claim. Copy it, or open it in the studio and watch the score move as you swap in your own work.

Why most software engineers don't get the call
Scope before stack
A hiring manager already assumes you can write code. What they cannot assume is the size of the system you wrote it for. "Built a payments service" and "Built a payments service settling $1.3B a year" describe the same work at two completely different levels. The second one gets the call.
Latency, throughput, availability
These three numbers do more for an engineering resume than any adjective. p99 latency, requests per second, and uptime are the vocabulary of the people reviewing you. If you have them, put them in a bullet. If you do not have them, name the next best scope: users, records, services, dollars.
The keyword filter reads your skills section first
Applicant tracking systems match on literal strings. "K8s" does not match a search for "Kubernetes", and "JS" does not match "JavaScript". Spell the technology out the way the job posting spells it, and keep it grouped so a human can still skim it in two seconds.
One page, until it genuinely cannot be
Under roughly ten years of experience, a second page is almost always the first page written twice. This example stays under 400 words. That is deliberate — it leaves room for you to add your own detail without blowing the one-page budget.
Skills and keywords for a software engineer resume
Applicant tracking systems match on literal strings. Spell each term the way the job posting spells it, and group related skills so people and parsers can both follow it.

Why each choice was made
Why the current role is in the present tense
Tense is one of the few things a recruiter notices unconsciously. A current role written in the past tense reads like you already left. Every bullet in the first job above opens in the present — Design, Lead, Migrate — and every bullet in the older jobs opens in the past.
Why every bullet carries a number
A claim with no number attached cannot be checked, so a reader discounts it. That is not a style preference — it is why this template's evidence density is what it is. The engine counts the proportion of bullets carrying a metric, a scope or a named outcome, and reports it above.
Why there is no Projects section
With five or more years of paid experience, side projects compete with your actual job for the same page. Add a Projects section only if it shows scale or novelty your employment does not — and cap it at two bullets.
Software engineer resume questions
What skills should I put on a software engineer resume?
The skills the job posting names, spelled the way it spells them. For a software engineer that often includes Go, Python, distributed systems, microservices, AWS and GCP. Show each one in a bullet with a result, then list the core ones again in a short skills section.
How do I write a software engineer resume summary?
Keep it to two or three sentences: your years of experience and where, the scale of your work, and one result with a number. Leave out words a recruiter cannot check, like hardworking or passionate. The example summary on this page shows the pattern.
Is this software engineer resume template free?
Yes. Open it in the Studio, replace the example with your own work and download it as a PDF or Word file. There is no watermark; downloading needs a free Google sign-in.
Is this software engineer resume template ATS friendly?
Yes. It is one column of real text with standard section headings, and no tables, text boxes or text inside images, so parsers read it in order. Run your finished file through the free ATS resume checker to see the text it gives back.
